How to Improve Your English Writing

With the advent of blogging, people can get themselves heard and noticed by others anywhere in the world. You’ll catch attention if you use a language known to all: English. Others can interact with you by posting comments. It would be a shame to get a comment regarding how bad your English is or how confusing your flow of thought is, rather than the content itself. To get you started, here are some tips on how to improve your English writing.

Here is a list that will make bad English writing a thing of the past:

TITLE
The title gets the attention of your readers. The catchier it is the more readers will take time to read what you have written.

COHERENCE
Your flow of thought must be well understood by the readers. Your shift from one sentence to another and from one paragraph to another must be smooth so as not to confuse the readers. Before making your final draft, ask someone to read your composition and give objective comments about it. If the person has some questions to ask you, something may be wrong and you might need to make significant changes.

JARGON and DICTION
Try to avoid making use of these terms unless you are writing a journal limited to a specific field such as medicine. Your goal is to be understood; not to impress the readers with profound yet inappropriate words.

GRAMMAR
Even native English writers commit grammatical errors. This only means the room for errors is wider for the non-natives. Brush up on your grammar and you will feel confident about what you are going to write.

PROOFREAD
If you cannot spot the grammatical and typographical errors in your own work, ask someone with a keen eye for such to do it for you. Letting an article get published only to find out that there are mistakes shows negligence on your part.

READ
Continue to read other people’s work to keep you inspired. Seeing how good others are at writing will only make you driven to improve your English writing.

Microsoft Word, and its open source competition Open Office, both offer built-in spelling and grammar check features.
